A Critical Examination of the Location of Paul’s Conversion on the Road to Damascus<\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I had the privilege of visiting Qumran in 2023, which which deepened my interest in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Essenes. I have come to the conclusion that the location of Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus is more compatible with a Qumran location than with the traditional site of Damascus, Syria.

6 Arguments That Support Questioning the Traditional Narrative:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The Followers of \u201cThe Way\u201d<\/strong>
    In     Acts 9:2<\/a>, Paul embarks on a journey to \u201cDamascus\u201d to persecute those belonging to \u201cThe Way\u201d. Much before the existence of the church, The Essene Community already referred to themselves as \u201cThe Way\u201d. This is most likely rooted in Isaiah’s prophecy such as

    Isaiah 40:3,14 \u2014 \u201cPrepare <\/em>the way<\/em><\/strong> of the Lord.\u201d ” <\/em>the way<\/em><\/strong> of understanding\u201d<\/em>

    John 14:6 – \u201cI am <\/em>the way<\/em><\/strong>, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.\u201d<\/em>

  2. Going Up to Jerusalem from Damascus<\/strong>
    The geography of Paul going up<\/strong> to Jerusalem (754m elevation)  from Damascus in Gal.     1:17<\/a> is more consistent with the region of the Dead Sea (-430 meters below sea level) than Damascus, Syria (680meters).

    From Damascus – 84<\/strong> vertical meters over ~329km<\/strong>
    From Dead Sea – 1200<\/strong> vertical meters in only ~20km<\/strong>

    \u201cUp to Jerusalem\u201d is cited about 26 other times in the Bible outside of the use in Galatians 1:17.

    – 7 times – up<\/strong> from the Jordan River Valley or Jericho (New Testament)
    – 7 times – up<\/strong> from Caesarea or Antioch (costal regions) (New Testament)
    – 7 times – Ezra (up from exile)
    – 2 times – Nehemiah (up from exile)
    – 2 times – 2 Kings

    Only twice is it connected in some way with Damascus\u2014 but in the context of going up in battle\u2026
    2 Chr 24:23<\/strong> \u2014 Arameans (from Damascus region) \u201ccame up<\/strong> against Joash<\/em>; and they came to Judah and Jerusalem\u201d
    2 Kings 12:17 – <\/strong> King Hazael of Damascus goes up against<\/em> Jerusalem (764m) from Gath (100m elevation)

    Using a plain grammatical<\/em><\/strong> hermeneutic, Qumran is more compatible with the text.

  3. Paul Spent 3 Years in \u201cDamascus”<\/strong>
    The     Gal 1:18<\/a> description of Paul spending 3 years in Damascus is compatible with the 1QS 6:13\u201323 requirement of 3 years of “initiation\u201d or theological studies to become officially part of the community.

  4. Arabia & The Nabateans<\/strong>
    <\/strong>Arabia has always referred to the Arabian Peninsula (south of Israel).

    Nabatean Arabs (King Aretus IV) never conquered Syria. The only ancient source used to make this assumption is 2 Corinthians 11:32\u201333<\/strong>, where Paul says:

    \u201cIn Damascus the governor under King Aretas was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me.\u201d<\/em>

    <\/em>The Nabateans (from Petra) controlled The Dead Sea region, Sinai, parts of Jordan, and parts of the Arabian peninsula, but there are no other sources stating that they reached Damascus Syria. The historical and geographical context of the Nabatean Kingdom in 32AD is much more compatible with Damascus as Qumran, then Damascus, Syria. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n


    Beyond this, Nabataean coins prove trade or dominion by the Nabateans. Of the 1250 coins found in Qumran by Roland de Vaux, roughly 3,5% of them were of Aretas IV, with others of Aretas III.  No Nabatean coins have been found in Damascus, Syria.

    After the Nabateans, the Arabs would only conquer Syria in 634 AD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Keeping  \u201cArabia\u201d south, in the Arabian Peninsula, also makes Paul’s Journey’s to and from Arabia in Galatians 1:17 more geographically logical. In addition to this, in Galatians 4:24-25, Paul expresses geographical knowledge of Mount Sinai in the Arabian peninsula: \u201cNow this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia<\/em>\u201d.

    Historical, archeological and geographical sources are all compatible with a Qumran location for Damascus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5. Code Name “Damascus\u201d in The Damascus Document<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      In The Damascus Document<\/em> (found both in Cairo Geniza and the Dead Sea Scrolls) the community in Qumran seems to be using cryptic or code language (a practice common in other dead sea scroll literature),  referring to their community as \u201cDamascus\u201d seven times. This could be in an effort to maintain their location secret.
